Heng Dian - The Oriental Bollywood

In Mandarin, Heng Dian means a row of shop houses in a straight, horizontal line. This town is thus named because indeed, 20 years ago, this town contained just a single row of shop houses. The rest were paddy fields, orchards and little vegetable farms. It was a far cry from the city of Shanghai where there were cars, high rise buildings and tourists. A village head noticed this and he felt very sad. He wanted the very best for his village. So, he decided to take the initiative to bring this town to greater heights.

One night, he sat down at his table, and thought about methods to improve the quality of life in this town when he heard the news on TV. The newscaster was reporting that one of the major directors in China was looking for a place to shoot a movie that really represented China. The Village Head was very excited. He listed down all the requirements that was representative of China: Vegetable farms, paddy fields, poor farmers, mud and wooden houses... etc. This, was the real China. Not Shanghai, Not Beijing. "Those cities were much too commercialized." he thought.
So, he contacted the TV station immediately. The director was very interested. So, he came down the next day to look at the place. Sadly, he was dissatisfied with this small, little town of Heng Dian. He dismissed it with a wave and said, "This is not what I want. It has nothing much to offer." and he returned to the city.

The village head, however, was not deterred. He was very determined to improve the village. He knew it had much potential to be developed. All it needed was a little push and it could be famous. So, he persevered and continued approaching more movie directors, until he met with the director of the movie "Hero".

The director told the village head, "All right. I will give you a chance. For my movie, I need an ancient palace, with all the ancient elements inside. The walls must be real, it must be high, just as told in the history books. All the details of the doors, the walls, the floor must be very detailed, to the carvings, the design, everything! Can you do it?"

When the village head heard that, he was overjoyed. Confident that he and the whole community of his village could do it, he replied, "Yes! You will see it ready in xxx years!"

With the support of the movie director, and the strength and faith of the community of Heng Dian, The village head took the lead to build the first and ever representative palace of the ancient times. The Heng Dian community studied the history of China, studied every single detail about the buildilngs in the palce, the palace, drew up a plan and built it accordingly. Even the tiles, the forte, the tiny carvings on the pillars was attended to with much patience and skill.

Finally, after xxx years, the movie studio was built. When all the final finishing touches were added, the director came to see the completed movie studio. He was so shocked that the villagers could complete such a major project in such a short time! He was so pleased that he began shooting the movie immediately.

That movie director was Zhang Yi Mou. With the excellent co-operation from the villagers and the film making community, today, Heng Dian is a world renowned spot for making films. The best part about making movies here is that it is absolutely free of charge. No rental fee at all. All the directors have to do are set up their own props.

The village Head of Heng Dian must be feeling very proud that Heng Dian has finally made a mark on the map of world. Today, there are more than 1 row of shop houses here. There are several rows, a famous move making studio, tourists flocking in by the bus loads, improving businesses and yet, the traditional part of Heng Dian still lives on. The farms, the paddy fields and farmers and TV casts.. locals and international residents all co-exist in harmony.

In the night, we witnessed the rain asking ritual by one of the tribes in Heng Dian.

Scary! Scary! They had been suffering from a long drought in the lands for a long time! They were desperate for rain. So, they carried and threw a long haired lady, with her hair covering her face! Gave her to the witch doctor and sacrificed her life!

Suddenly, thunder boomed from afar and streaks of lightning began striking all around the village! "Yes! Yes! It's working!" cried the villagers! "Continue your ritual. Do not stop!"

And suddenly, rain began pouring from the sky. The nearby dam was filled and its water began pouring down upon the streams and rivers and overflowed through the hills and plains. Villagers began running down the beaten paths of the forest, running between the bamboo shoots, shouting "Help! Stop! U asked for too much rain! Now it's flooding our village!"

After all the commotion, the witch doctor leads the crowd into a bon-fire dance. *No lives sacrificed this time. Phew! What a scary night it was! Really sent shudders down my bones!
