Highlight on My Last Night in Shanghai
Shining McD looks expensive!
Despite the fact that Shanghai is mushrooming with high-rise buildings everywhere we go, looking like a rich, lovely young lady in the night, it is still not as glamorous and rich as it seems. Poverty still exists, hidden in the darkest nights, masked by the ever changing colours of neon lights on every classy shopping complexes. Seen by only those who chance upon it, or for those gems who search and expose it.
When I visited, it was already approaching winter. The end of autumn. It was cold, about 15 degrees celcius. Colder than the minimum temperature of our air-conditioned rooms. Everyone was wrapped in 4-5 layers of clothings; 1 thin, 1 medium and 3 really thick layer of woolen and silk.
Walking along the streets, I was once again attracted by the ever changing lights with its patterns and lights!
Suddenly, I saw the flashing lights of McDonalds and I was so tempted to try their grilled chicken burger and peach pie! So, I walked into one of the many branches of McD chain and came out with 2 peach pies, 2 grilled chicken burgers 2 packets of chips and 2 coca-cola cups. Just as I placed the food on the bench outside the restaurant, just as I was about to make myself comfortable, along came a little girl about 5 years old, clinging on to her mother. The mother and daughter pair approached me. Then the daughter looked longingly at the peach pie I was holding, pointed to it and looked at her mom, "Ma! wo ye yao! (I want it too!)"
I was shocked! If she were my little sister, I would have understood and gave it to her. But here, is a little girl, who is neither my sister, nor my cousin, not even my friend's daughter, a total, absolutely unknown stranger, who comes to me and points at the peach pie I am holding and asks her mom in a cute voice, "Mom! I want it too!"
Needless to say, I was stunned for half a minute. Within that half a minute, I think the mom tried to pull the daughter away, but the daughter still looked so longingly at the peach pie that I felt the urge to give her the pie. And so, I took out one peach pie and gave it to her.
The girl took it in her little hands and then the mother-daughter pair walked further and further into the night, disappearing into the crowd.
Just as I thought it was such a bizarre thing to happen, in the city of Shanghai, along came a little boy. I forgot whether he was with his mom. But, he came along, he saw me eating outside on the bench, in the cool streets, pointed at the potato chips and said, " wo yao!"
At that moment, I almost fainted! oh no! here comes another cute little boy! And so, I gave him the potato chips! huhuhuhu! At the rate I was going and the children coming, all my food will be gone! huhuhu! After those 2 bizarre events, whenever I saw a mother and child approaching, I would be so afraid that my food will be finished even before I started eating them! That was the moment I understood why nobody ate in the park, and all of them ate in the dining area. huhuhuhu!
Life is pretty hard for the poor, especially in a 4-season country. When winter arrives, it is harder to go out to earn daily wages, buy food, whatsmore afford a McDonald burger. Yet, these children live in the city. They see McDonalds everyday. see its mouth-watering advertisement burgers, ice-cream and chips! But they can't taste it! Maybe that is why they ask for McD pies and chips from unsuspecting tourists like me!
