Kota Kinabalu - The Land Below The Wind

I have heard so many interesting things about Kota Kinabalu even before I visited it. From my cousin, I heard it was a really beautiful land. My uncle said it had really beautiful islands. My friends eagerly told me about their exciting climb to Mount KK just to be among the clouds! "Lots of cheap and nice pearls too!" added my colleagues.

Recently, I've developed a thirst for adventure. Ever since I stopped going to the rig, most of my senses have been tightly shut. I just feel the need to awaken all my senses again! Just like the times I was offshore! Where I had to be alert, think, act, talk all at the same time! Ahhh... Life was soooo exciting then. All I wanted was to recapture the flow of adrenaline; the feel of being challenged; of being at the edge of real danger; of being thrown at the mercy of Mother Nature ... leaving everything up to my own persistence, discipline and natural instincts! So, when the opportunity presented itself for me to visit the infamous Land Below The Wind, I eagerly grabbed it without a moment's hesitation.

I came to KK expecting it to be similar to Miri town. After all, Miri and KK are on the same continent of Borneo, although they are in different states. I expected it to be a small town, with a few tall buildings. That's all!

But Lo and Behold! The moment I stepped into the airport of KK, I was taken by surprise! It looked much more developed than the Miri airport. As I sat in the car of one of of my new found friends, I was surprised to see that it was beautifully lighted up in the night. There were so many high-rise buildings, just like Kuala Lumpur. I could even see the PETRONAS Towers (Menara PETRONAS) from afar; the pride and joy of the nation! If we increased the number of cars on the roads and the width of the roads, it would look exactly like Kuala Lumpur. If not for the fact that it was by the sea, I would have thought that I was in KL in the wee hours of the night!

There are certainly billions of activities to be conducted in Sabah, a state with a population of about 2.5 million people. On my first trip there, I was given my first taste of high rope walking, dunking-balloons- flying fox, trampoline bungee jumping, and wall climbing! Not to mention Quad driving and buggy riding! Next time I 'll probably try canoe-ing and white water rafting!

Flying Fox-I screamed and yelled my lungs out! Absolutely love it!

On that day, my courage was challenged indeed. But not as far as I expected. My heart still feels vacant. Void of the satisfaction of global interaction. I have a strong feeling it can only be filled by going back offshore, even if it's just one more time. I just need to feel the adrenaline flowing through my veins. It is a feeling only those who are in the same predicament will understand.

As I happily participated in all tiring activities under the hot sun, I was thoroughly sun burnt. Silly me! Thought I wouldn't be burnt by the heat. After all, it's Malaysia. The temperature was 35 deg Celcius. I'm fair. What's the worst that could happen? Besides, I need a change of image. Turning really dark would be a real 'make-over'. hahahah! And so, by the time we got our prizes, my face was redder than the chilli padi. I was soooooo happy! Exhausted, but satisfied!

In the night, we went to Restoran Nelayan for seafood. We had this Sabah Vege, which was absolutely indescribable! And for the First time in my life, I danced! On Stage too!!!! As the 'natives' taught the dance steps, and the ladies hit the hollow bamboo trunks on the ground, I followed the rhythm and tapped my feet to the most basic sound of all. Without drums, without any instruments, except the tapping of the bamboo trunks. Being daft, my feet got snapped by the bamboo quite a few times! But overall, It was so exciting! All the adrenaline, offshore memories, satisfaction came rushing back through my mind once again. I was exhilarated! Yes! Yes! Yes! It's all returning to me! I just wished I could live in this moment forever!
